Mentor Program

The Mentor Program provides guidance to young people, initially in a group setting and then one-on-one during their senior year, with the purpose of encouraging youth to continue their education beyond high school despite obstacles they may encounter.

Highlights of the Mentor Program include campus and business tours, job shadowing opportunities, a get-acquainted picnic, a cultural event featuring dinner and a musical or play, and the annual awards banquet during which corporate-sponsored scholarships are awarded.

Exposure to the success stories and challenges that an ESC Mentor can provide insures a positive and long-lasting impression on these students' lives.

ESC Mentoring Mission Statement

The ESC Mentor Program enhances individual potential by assisting students in defining career and educational goals and by motivating students to grasp opportunities and aspire to higher achievement.

ESC Mentor Program Goals:

·        Help students understand the importance of good grades   and study habits.

·        Help students determine potential career choices.

·        Help students identify potential scholarship sources.

·        Help students meet deadlines involved with financial aid and college applications.

·        Provide students with information concerning different colleges and areas of study.

·        Help students explore alternative post high school options if college is not the goal.

·        Expose students to new opportunities that may help them identify and expand their interests.

·        Help students become more skilled at time-management, goal-setting, and self-discipline.

·        Encourage students to believe in their potential.

·        Provide positive adult role models.

·        Demonstrate proper etiquette and respectful standards of behavior.

·        Be genuinely interested in the student's well-being.

The mentor program is divided into two parts:

Group Mentoring for Juniors:

With the help of the teachers and guidance counselors, a select group of juniors participates in the Group Mentor Program.  A team of ESC volunteers meet with the students bi-monthly during the school day. The Group Mentor curriculum covers topics such as time management, study skills, preparation for further education and career selection. Special events include an Orientation incorporating parents/guardians, Student Cultural Events, and Awards Luncheon.

One-on-One Mentoring for Seniors:

At the end of the junior year, we assign an individual mentor to each student who has shown the interest to continue the program. The seniors and their mentors meet regularly on their own throughout the year and as a group once a month. The focus is to help the student prepare for life after high school. The mentors may set up campus tours and job shadowing opportunities. They also assist the student to meet important SAT/ACT, financial aid, and college application deadlines. Special events include the Summer Picnic, Cultural Event, Campus tours, and Awards Luncheon.
